BOSTON, Jun 21, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --Iron
Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), the information management
company, today announced a new tiered offering for its Registry Data
Escrow service to meet the needs of registry operators as they introduce
new generic top-level domains (gTLDs). With the rapid expansion of
Internet use worldwide, ICANN,
the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is implementing
an initiative to expand the domain name space to include an array of new
gTLDs. Preparation for the expansion of the gTLD space will be a major
theme of the 38th
ICANN International Meeting held in Brussels on June 20 - 25, where
Iron Mountain will sponsor and exhibit.
ICANN is poised to authorize the creation of potentially hundreds of new
gTLDs over the next two to three years, supplementing the 22 gTLDs
currently in existence - such as .com, .net and .org. Iron
Mountain provides escrow services for the majority of today's gTLDs and
will offer its Registry
Data Escrow services for the new gTLDs as well.
All gTLDs require daily escrow of their authoritative data as part of
their Registry Agreement with ICANN. Iron Mountain's latest offering for
its Registry Data Escrow service is based on the number of domain names
registered under a given gTLD, rather than on escrow storage space
requirements. This will benefit all new registry operators as they
create various gTLD types and sizes. Registry operators could base
top-level domains on corporate brands (e.g., .ironmountain),
regional geographies (e.g., .brussels), and additional
generic designations (e.g., .restaurant). Iron Mountain
can accommodate both existing and forthcoming domain name registries of
all sizes.
"In 2001, Iron Mountain and ICANN created the first registry data escrow
program to better protect the integrity of domain name registration
data," said John Boruvka, vice president of intellectual property
management at Iron Mountain Digital. "Now, Iron Mountain provides
Registry Data Escrow services to both new gTLD registries as well as to
existing gTLD and global ccTLD registries. By doing so, Iron Mountain
will continue to help safeguard the continuity of service across the
Internet."
To help the Internet community further understand the impact of new
gTLDs, Iron Mountain has developed a white paper on the topic, titled What's
Next for the New gTLDs?
