Iron Mountain Helps Registries Prepare for Launch of New gTLDs with Registry Data Escrow Services

White Paper on new gTLDs available for 39th International Meeting of ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers

BOSTON, Dec 06, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Iron Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), the information management company, will sponsor and exhibit at this week's 39th ICANN International Meeting held in Cartagena, Colombia, to support ICANN as it prepares for the introduction of new generic top-level domains (gTLDs). New gTLDs will open the global Internet to a new realm of choices, beyond the 22 gTLDs currently in existence (such as .com, .net, and .org). Iron Mountain is collaborating with Registry Operators and Registry Service Providers to ensure that they have planned for the Registry Data Escrow functions required for all new gTLDs.

As new gTLDs are allocated, their registries will be required to comply with data escrow requirements similar to those that ICANN maintains for existing gTLDs. This is to ensure the continuation of Domain Name System operations in the event of a physical or business failure of a registry. Iron Mountain provides escrow services for the majority of today's gTLDs and will offer its Registry Data Escrow services for the new gTLDs as well.

ICANN has now posted the Proposed Final New gTLD Applicant Guidebook, bringing the Internet significantly closer to the introduction of New Generic Top-Level Domains. The introduction of new gTLDs will open the global Internet to a new realm of choices, offering unprecedented opportunities for businesses, communities, governments, and Internet users to create digital identities in their own language and better manage their own online branding. To help the Internet community further understand the impact of new gTLDs, Iron Mountain has released a white paper on the topic, titled New gTLDs Approach the Finish Line.

Iron Mountain has also signed co-referral agreements with five leading Registry Service Providers: Central Registry Solutions (CRS),UrbanBrain Incorporated, AusRegistry International, Afilias Limited, and Qinetics Solutions Berhad (RegistryASP). Under the terms of these agreements, Iron Mountain will refer prospective gTLD Registry Operators to these service providers for registry services, and they in turn will refer prospective Registry Operators to Iron Mountain for data escrow services.

The pricing structure of Iron Mountain's tiered offering for Registry Data Escrow services is based on the number of domain names registered under a given gTLD, rather than on escrow storage space requirements, which will benefit all new registry operators as they create various gTLD types and sizes. Iron Mountain can accommodate both existing and forthcoming domain name registries of all sizes.

"The importance of registry data escrow can't be overemphasized, and ICANN vigorously enforces Registry Operator compliance with this requirement," said John Boruvka, vice president of intellectual property management at Iron Mountain. "Iron Mountain has been working with ICANN for nearly a decade and created the first registry data escrow program to better protect the integrity of domain name registration data. With the introduction of the new gTLDs, Iron Mountain will continue to provide escrow services to help safeguard the continuity of service across the Internet."
