Co-Referral Program Complements Solutions for Brand Owners Seeking
New Domain Names
BOSTON & HERNDON, Va., May 03, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --Iron
Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), and Central
Registry Solutions (CRS), a provider of consulting, domain
registration, and back-end registry services, today announced a
co-referral program to benefit applicants for new generic top-level
domains (gTLDs) on the Internet.
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has
initiated a new opportunity for businesses and communities to define and
acquire their own gTLDs - that is - choosing their own unique character
string for the right-most position in a domain name, rather than merely
choosing a subdomain under an existing gTLD such as .com or .net. The
organization is preparing to accept new gTLD applications in 2010, when
potentially hundreds of new gTLDs will be introduced to supplement the
current 21 gTLDs in existence.
"ICANN is creating an unprecedented opportunity for corporations,
organizations, special interest groups, and communities to create their
own domain ending, opening up Internet-based identity and branding to
all interested parties," said Bill Gore, Chairman of the Board for
Central Registry Solutions. "While CRS's services will guide new gTLD
applicants through the complexities of creating and running a new
top-level domain, our program with Iron Mountain will enable new
Registry Operators to ensure their domain is safeguarded with the
industry's premier registry escrow services."
Under the terms of this referral program, Iron Mountain will refer
prospective gTLD Registry Operators to Central Registry Solutions for
registry services and CRS will refer prospective Registry Operators to
Iron Mountain for data escrow services.
As the new gTLDs are created their registries will be required to comply
with data escrow requirements similar to those that ICANN maintains for
existing gTLDs. This is to ensure the continuation of Domain Name System
operations in the event of a physical or business failure of a registry.
In 2001, Iron Mountain was the first company selected to protect domain
name registry data via escrow agreements. Today, Iron Mountain's global
leadership in information protection, management and storage translates
into the most comprehensive and trusted Domain
Name Registry Data Escrow Services available.
"We are pleased to partner with CRS as we both work with organizations
exploring new domain opportunities," said John Boruvka, vice president
of intellectual property management at Iron Mountain Digital. "CRS
understands that depositing registry data into secure escrow accounts
managed by Iron Mountain helps safeguard the continuity of the Domain
Name System across the Internet."
As ICANN rolls out the new gTLD application process, Central Registry
Solutions and Iron Mountain will be available resources to new gTLD
applicants as they navigate the strategy, implementation, and protection
of their new domains.
