BOSTON & ST. INGBERT, Germany, Jun 06, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Iron
Mountain Incorporated (NYSE: IRM), the information management
company, and Key-Systems,
international domain registrar, have entered into a co-referral
agreement to benefit applicants for new generic top-level domains
(gTLDs), which will expand the domain names on the Internet. Under the
terms of this agreement, Iron Mountain will refer prospective gTLD
Registry Operators to Key-Systems for registry services, and Key-Systems
will refer prospective Registry Operators to Iron Mountain for data
escrow services.
The Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the
organization responsible for coordinating the Internet's unique
identifiers, including the domain name system (DNS). Introducing new
gTLDs will help ICANN to promote competition in the domain name market
while ensuring Internet security and stability. A gTLD is an Internet
extension such as .COM, .ORG, or .INFO. It is part of the structure of
the Internet's domain name system.
Iron Mountain currently provides escrow services for the majority of
today's gTLDs and will offer its Registry
Data Escrow services for the new gTLDs as well. Hundreds of new gTLD
applications are expected to be submitted by companies and organizations
once the New gTLD Program is officially launched, which is anticipated
to happen later this year. Key-Systems' KSregistry provides features and
functions to successfully operate a registry and is ideal for applicants
for new gTLDs and companies planning to establish their name or brand as
a new TLD. With this agreement with Iron Mountain, Key-Systems will now
be able to offer full compliance with data escrow requirements as part
of its services.
"The New gTLD Program by ICANN initiates a new era on the Internet -
with more diversity and more ways of use in the domain name space," said
Alexander Siffrin, CEO of Key-Systems. "Key-Systems offers our customers
comprehensive technical and consulting services for successfully
operating such a new gTLD. We look forward to working with Iron Mountain
- the recognized worldwide leader in registry data escrow - to provide
our customers with this service."
As the new gTLDs are created, their registries will be required to
comply with data escrow requirements similar to those that ICANN
maintains for existing gTLDs. This is to ensure the continuity of Domain
Name System operations in the event of a physical, technical or business
failure of a registry. Iron Mountain was the first company to protect
domain name registry data via escrow agreements in 2001. Today, Iron
Mountain's global leadership in information management translates into
the most comprehensive and trusted Domain
Name Registry Data Escrow Services available.
John Boruvka, vice president of intellectual property management at Iron
Mountain, added, "As ICANN begins to roll out the new gTLD application
process, Iron Mountain is proud to work with Key-Systems, one of the
world's largest domain registrars, as it guides new gTLD applicants
through domain registration, management, hosting and monitoring for
their new domains. We're pleased that Key-Systems values Iron Mountain's
expertise in providing safe and secure registry data escrow services,
and that we are able to provide new gTLD customers assurance through our
escrow services."
